The Best Hoyer Lifts: What is a Hoyer Lift and How Do You Use It?

If you or someone you love has trouble with mobility, a hoyer lift might make caring for them a lot easier. A hoyer lift is a device that helps get someone in and out of bed. It involves a pad that connects to the lift frame and a hydraulic or electric pump that is used to lift the person out of and into the bed. While a caregiver is necessary to maneuver the lifted person into a wheelchair or the bed, having the hydraulic pumps to lift the person makes transferring them to and from bed more accessible and safer.

Types of Hoyer Lifts

There are several types of hoyer lifts (also known as patient lifts), including:

  • Manual Hoyer Lifts: Also known as hydraulic hoyer lifts, manual hoyer lifts have hydraulic cylinders powered by a hand pump. Hydraulic operation makes the pumping and lifting process easier for caregivers.
  • Power Hoyer Lifts: Running on electricity or battery power, power hoyer lifts, also known as electric hoyer lifts, don’t require manual pumping. These lifts allow caregivers to safely transfer their loved ones or care recipients without risking injury.
  • Sit-to-Stand Hoyer Lifts: Sit-to-stand lifts are designed to assist those who have difficulty standing or rising from a sitting position. These hoyer lifts come in both manual and power options, and some are lightweight and designed for portability. A stand-assist lift is similar, but rather than aid a person from a sitting to standing position, it’s designed to aid in transferring from one seated position to another – such as from a stationary chair to a wheelchair or vice-versa.

How a Hoyer Lift Works

While there are several types of hoyer lifts, they all serve the same primary function: easing the process of transitioning a person from one location to another, whether it’s from a chair to bed, a seated position to standing, or from bed to the toilet or chair.

Hoyer lifts have slings that are positioned carefully under the patient before the lift is operated. To use a hoyer lift properly, ensure that the sling is properly positioned to support the patient. Specific positioning (facing the lift operator, etc.) varies depending on whether the patient is being transferred from a bed or seated position. The patient’s weight should be centered over the lift’s base legs, and the base should be spread to the widest position for maximum stability. Depending on the type of lift, the caregiver activates the lifting function after the patient is properly positioned by using the pumping mechanism (for hydraulic lifts) or pressing a button (for electric hoyer lifts).

To lower a patient using a hydraulic lift, the caregiver or operator turns the hydraulic release valve counter-clockwise in order to open it. This valve is located near the pump handle. Electric hoyer lifts have a button on the hand control to activate the lowering function.

It’s imperative that caregivers are properly trained on using a hoyer lift, and it’s a good idea to practice using the lift’s functions a few times before using it to transfer a patient or loved one.
